Choosing Your Surgeon

When choosing a plastic or cosmetic surgeon for any procedures you are thinking of receiving, there are many important things to ask:

1. Experience of the Surgeon

• Has the surgeon been performing the procedure you are interested in for a long time?
• How many surgeries has he or she performed?
• How often does he or she perform the procedure?
• Have there ever been any complications?

Make sure you receive photographic examples of the surgeon's past work including pre and post-operative photographs of the operation. This should include a variety of different examples, not just one or two, in order to satisfy you of the surgeon has significant experience performing the procedure.

2. Rapport with the Surgeon

You should always feel comfortable with the surgeon and feel satisfied that an unbiased explanation of the procedure has been given including all side effects and any other potential complications. By the end of the consultation you should feel confident that all your interests will be looked after by your surgeon. The surgeon may be able to arrange other patients who have had the procedure to speak to you.

3. Post Operative care

Here are some quesitons you should ask:

• What if there are problems after your surgery?
• Will you be able to contact the surgeon or their staff quickly?
• Will the surgeon themself speak to you and offer advice and solutions?
• Will the surgeon see you after surgery and how many times will they do this?

Make sure you are aware of ALL the costs before proceding.

4. Reputation of the Surgeon

You should endeavour to find out the reputation of particular surgeons in your area from your general practitioner. You should also ask any friends or family that have dealt with the surgeon in the past for feedback.

Dr Murray's Credentials

Dr Murray studied at UWA where he qualified for a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. He is the president of the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia (CPSA) and an Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) councillor and conference organiser. He has also qualified for a Diploma in Liposuction and has appeared in television on various occasions to talk about medical operations.
